In the heart of Downtown San Luis Obispo, we cast our nets and found Branzino! Fresh off the Grand Opening in March 2019, Branzino! specializes in Spanish seafood-themed, culinary creations and is sure and soon to be a local favorite!
Owner and Proprietor Jeremy brings the taste of Barcelona to the Central Coast.
Jeremy Pemberton, Owner and Proprietor, tells us that he spent 11 days in Spain, including Barcelona, Zaragoza, San Sebastian, Madrid, Palma De Mallorca, and Port de Soller, Mallorca. He enjoyed poring over 130 menus in his field research, to bring truly authentic Spanish Pescado fare, with a uniquely Californian, urban, vibe to the Central Coast, right here in San Luis Obispo. He reached out far and wide to find the right talent to create and add the right flair to the menu that is Branzino!.
His “catch of the day” is Chef Carlos Lool. Chef Carlos, who has an extensive resume from the age of 15, in his native Guatemala, honed his culinary skills working in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, graduated at the top of his class at the Connecticut Culinary Institute, and has groomed his craft under the likes of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa in Los Angeles, a Michelin star-rated restaurant. Here he learned the art of precision Japanese techniques and presentation. When Bistro Laurent Tourondel opened, Carlos joined their opening team, perfecting the art of a modern American steakhouse.
Here at Branzino!, you’ll be delighted to enjoy the merger of his talent and Jeremy’s vision and expertise. The surroundings and ambiance are unpretentious, yet with an understated, modern elegance. Family-friendly tables invite, a front window setup is perfect for lively meetups and the wall seating, I was told New York style, encourages lively conversation, adding to the experience.
We enjoyed the Salmon Crudos, with a pomegranate dressing, pomegranate seeds, citrus and tarragon leaves, was our first experience. The presentation was bright and delightful. Every mouthwatering bite proved to be amazing!

Next, we enjoyed Hamachi Crudos, with an avocado leche de tigre, jalapeno, avocado, citrus and olive oil complement. I know why this is a Branzino! Favorite! The citrus avocado marriage,with the yellow-tail (Hamachi), was a beautiful, smooth, creamy surprise.
Their Tapas sampling included Peewee marble potatoes, chipotle salsa brava and feta crema. Again, the blend of textures in this experience was another surprise. The feta crema rounded out the dish..oh those beautiful textures! And the Truffle Mushroom Croquetas, with the chili aioli, laced with parmesan…sabroso!
Their Caesar Salad enhances your life with every bite.
Platos Fuertes y Paellas:
The Zarzuela de Leon dish features market fish, scallops, clams, mussels, squid and tomate saffron stew. A beautiful creation, not be missed. The essence of Spanish California “de la mar” that Branzino! hopes to deliver.
